The Library
The SSM library at St Antony’s is spread across two sites: the Priory and the Institute, with subject areas divided between them.
Spirituality, pastoral theology, spiritual direction, prayer and mysticism, as well as philosophy, psychology, sociology, comparative religion and religious studies can be found in the Priory library. Biblical studies (Old and New Testaments), theology (with numerous sub-categories), church history and religious life, are all in the Institute library.
A new library was built in the Priory as part of an extensive programme of refurbishment works carried out in 2019. The collection was then re-catalogued, and this catalogue is accessible online.
In the meantime, also in 2019, Willen Priory closed, and the much larger collection of books there went into storage.
Then, in 2025, as part of the development of the Herbert Kelly Institute for Anglican Religious Life, another new library was built at 72 Claypath, and the books from Willen were brought to Durham.
Using the Library
Unfortunately it will not be possible to borrow books until cataloguing is complete.
At present the Priory library is open but it will be several months before the Institute library is available.
We hope that our libraries will be a useful resource for students and researchers, as well as guests, visitors, and those who may be taking courses through the Priory.
